2021 NT Budget: What’s in store for Katherine

2021 NT Budget: What’s in store for Katherine

The town of Katherine is a major regional logistics and agribusiness hub, connecting Darwin and Alice Springs with Western Australia and Queensland.

The region has a significant defence presence, including the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) Base Tindal, Bradshaw Field Training Area and Delamere Air Weapons Range. Key tourist attractions include Nitmiluk Gorge, Leliyn (Edith Falls), Mataranka, and recreational fishing in the big rivers of the region. Mining activity in the region includes gold and other minerals around Pine Creek and zinc/lead around McArthur River, south west of Borroloola.

We outline the changes for Katherine as per the 2021 NT Budget below:

$10.1M Land Release for Katherine East

Land in Katherine East continues to be released for flood‑free homes. $10.1 million continues to be invested in Katherine East to provide a variety of lot types and sizes that can accommodate a diverse mix of dwellings. Providing commercial and retail space, tourist accommodation facilities along with restaurants and a town park, this centre will be a focus for bustling pedestrian activity. Construction of headworks in power, water and roads will commence this financial year along with planning for the internal servicing works to support this growing urban centre.

$1.1 Billion for Defence RAAF Base Tindal

The 2020 Defence Strategic Update and the 2020 Force Structure Plan reinforce the significance of the Territory to national security, with over $8 billion to be invested in the Territory over the next decade. Major projects over the budget and forward estimates period include $1.1 billion for works at RAAF Base Tindal.

$30M  Katherine Logistics and Business Hub

The Katherine Logistics and Agribusiness Hub is well advanced in planning and an agreement has been reached with the owners of Manbulloo Station for the land acquisition to progress the industrial precinct.

$2.2M  Katherine Showgrounds Upgrades

The Katherine Showgrounds hosts a number of large-scale community events including the Katherine Show and the Katherine Races. The 2021 Budget invests $2.2 million to improve infrastructure at the showgrounds, including roads, rodeo and campdraft infrastructure, and enhanced amenities

$3M Buntine Highway Upgrades

The upgrades support the region’s beef, cattle, tourism and mining industries, providing jobs and economic development opportunities for local communities.

$150M Carpentaria Highway Upgrades

The upgrades will improve access to jobs, essential services and freight links in the Barkly and Big Rivers regions. The project will also support development of the Beetaloo Basin. Design works are underway for the first 50 kilometre section of the road, with the first stage of major works to commence in late 2021. The long-term goal is to seal the road from the Victoria Highway to the Western Australian border.
